If you live with borderline personality disorder , you may have idea that your inner critic is the driving force behind most of the maladaptive behaviours.
Generally during childhood or later stages if you were constantly criticized, mocked down upon or punished , it’s very likely that you may have internalised some of those statements like you are not good enough, you are a failure , you would amount to nothing etc.
Over time this inner critic becomes large and fat due to the experiences we accumulate, how quickly we judge ourselves and lack of self.
Sometimes Inner critic is that constant noise going parallel with everything we do. It tries to measure everything we do on an ideal scale. And it feed on the negative experiences. If you even make a slight mistake then it will be ringing loud in the ears, I already told you so, you can’t do this. People with BPD struggle Continuously with this due to the inherent core content that they are not enough.
Many people with BPD have suffered trauma and internalised all those negative self believes . Then the inner critic comes into play and feed on internalised beliefs. It drives a lot of BPD behaviours like self harming, dissociation, splitting, depression, feeling a void etc.
But remember your inner critic is a liar. It is a trickster. You are a human and bound to make mistakes.
Challenge your inner critic with the facts and present. Try to see the actual picture.
Challenge it with positive affirmations about yourself.
Collect your succeses, positive experiences, and with your resilience tell your inner critic that it’s a liar.
Keep fighting. Believe in yourself that you are a force of nature. Your inner critic with time will become small and won’t be able to stand before you.
Woooooowwww…I like this kind of psychological facts about our mind and body. Just drop by to say great post. Thanks for sharing

I don’t have BPD but I know all about that inner critic. We all should work on it more than we do but it’s so hard!

Yes, it’s hard. It’s a long term habit of ours. But we can do this. We need to be more self accepting and loving.

I learned something new, I’ve never even heard of BPD before. I try to challenge myself on a daily basis but that doesn’t always work out for me. I struggle at times to believe in myself enough to do some things.

BPD is borderline personality disorder, the most stigmatised mental illness. That’s great you challenge yourself. Believe in yourself, with time it becomes more easy and natural.

I think that this is a great read for even those people without BPD. Everyone has their inner critic and itās easy to let it get away with saying nasty thingsā¦ things you may end up believing. Noticing this inner critic is step 1 to feeling better. Cause once you notice it, you can start to question it.

Agreed. We all have our inner critic going on. Once we recognize it, we can work on it.

Interesting angle to take don’t know if I agree 100%. The reason is first the inner critic. Most people call that imposter syndrome. Your inn critic tells you are not worthy of attention you are a fraud. Then the part about being criticized causes me to say that everybody in school get criticized several times while going through school. The teacher gives criticism on the writing homework. The boy who likes you teases you because he doesn’t have the social skills to flirt. The bully in the class looks for the slightest embarrassment to point out to the world.
Yet I do know that people react as differently to events as there are people so there is that. It do like the tips. But also many people ask themselves useless questions. Take why am I so fat? Or am I this stupid on purpose? Any other similar question to that effect.
You want to remember you brain is basically like a computer. You enter a question it will do the work needed to prove that question is correct.
Am I fat? Yes you are because you like all this wonderful food. Yes you have all these rolls. Yes.
Are you stupid? Yes because you ask dumb questions. Yes, You don’t understand the homework the first time. Yes.
Ask yourself quality questions like how can can I lose weight questions like that. That way you are putting you mind to use as you go about your day and sleep.

Criticism for a person with borderline personality disorder can be a major trigger. Leading them more into spiral. They already suffer with lack of sense of self so the inner critic can sometimes be devastating for them. So many times it reminds them of the trauma endured.

I don’t have BPD, but I know how it feels to be criticized in a not-so-constructive manner. Not the best feeling in the world, and it leaves an emotional scar.

I have Bipolar l Disorder and struggle with the same issue. Recently someone said to me “I know you have mental issues, but I have bent over backwards for you. ” Who would ever say “I know you have diabetes or cancer or lost a leg, but just get over it.” I am still talking myself through that one. Thankfully, my husband finally understands me enough to weather the storms. Thanks for bring awareness to the unseen battles we face every day.
