When we talk about suspense, thrillers and murder mysteries, the first novelist that crosses everyone’s mind is Agatha Christie. She is an outstanding writer of around 66 novels and some short stories.
Finally I got the chance to read her most famous and best selling Novel of all the times, ‘and there were none’. After a long time I read a book that kept me hooked till the ending.
It’s a murder mystery set up on Soldier island. There are ten people invited to live on this exotic island by someone named Mr. Owen. However when they come to the island, soon they find out it was a trap to punish them for the crimes they did during their lifetime, thought nobody knew about these crimes . However there is someone who takes upon himself to put them to death for these felonies.
There are ten people living on the whole island. And soon killings start happening among them . No one knows who is doing it. Though one thing is sure, the murderer is living among them and hiding in plain site. Among these ten people one is the killer. And he follows the pattern of a nursery rhyme to execute everyone.
Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; one choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little soldier boys sat up very late; one overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little soldier boys travelling in Devon; one said he would stay there and then there were seven.
Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks; one chopped himself in half and then there were six.
Six little soldier boys playing with hive; a bumble bee stung one and then there were five.
Five little soldier boys going in for law; one get into chancery and then there were four.
Four little soldier boys going out to sea; a red herring swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little soldier boys walking in the zoo, a bear hugged one and then there were two.
Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun; one got frizzled up and then there was one.
One little soldier boy left alone; he went and hanged himself and then there were none.
This book was really so captivating that it kept me hooked upto the end. I read it whole in one go. The language is easy and the story moves flawlessly on a smooth pace. Till the end, no one can guess who is the killer and yes during the whole book you end up suspecting each of them that this person might be the killer . The ending is great and answers everything.
If you love reading thrillers then this is a must read. Also now this book is also available as a BBC series. Have a great time reading it people.
